The Army’s MQM-170A is based on the Outlaw Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) developed by Griffon and currently in production. The aircraft offers a tough, low-cost, proven platform with extensive operational experience worldwide.

Low Observability

The aircraft’s shape and materials yield low radar observability characteristics. Multiple payload bays are available for integration of specialized payloads or the standard suite of EO/IR sensors. The Outlaw is often used as a reliable airframe to support rapid development of emerging sensor/UAV payloads.

Tough Construction

Outlaw’s rugged composite airframe is designed for harsh field conditions and ease of repair. An existing production line providing a reliable supply is unique in the UAV industry. The tough airframe can be used with or without a landing gear. Readily available, off-the-shelf flight control and system components are extensively used. Mid-aircraft payload bays can be configured interchangeably as fuel or sensor bays thereby exchanging mission endurance for payload capacity.

Versatile Control System

The standard Ground Control Station (GCS) consists of one or more laptop computers to display the AV health and status and mission execution. The telemetry suitcase contains the AV and sensor transceivers and the interfaces to the laptops. Data links to drive the sensor displays are available through the telemetry suitcase. Operational range without the use of data relay is about 60 nmi.

Flexible Launch/Recovery

The Outlaw may be operated from either the inexpensive launcher or a runway. If the Outlaw is launcher deployed, recovery is typically a skid landing. For missions using delicate sensor or deployable payloads, the landing gear version is used and flown from a runway.
